Is MobileyMe a second phone number?
No. It works with the number you already have. Friends, clients, and your bank keep seeing the same number they always have. Nothing to port and no new number to hand out.
Do I need to set it up before I lose my phone?
Yes, and it's the one thing to know. MobileyMe backs up your number and contacts from your own phone, so it has to be installed and signed in while that phone still works. Setup takes about three minutes. After that, you're covered.
What if my phone is gone and the SIM went with it?
That is the case it was built for. Sign in on any other iPhone, Android phone, tablet, or browser and everything is there: contacts, messages, call history, and voicemail. You can call from your own number and text your contacts while you sort out a replacement.
How do calls and texts work?
Calls go out from your real number, so people see you calling, and calls to your number can ring the device you're signed in on. Texts work a little differently: you text your contacts through the app from a MobileyMe number, and their replies come straight back to you. Texts that a bank or a website sends to your regular number, like login codes, still go to your SIM, so those wait until you have your phone or a replacement.
Is it safe to sign in on someone else's phone?
Yes. Nothing gets saved to the phone you borrow, and when you sign out MobileyMe removes your contacts and messages from it. If you walk away without signing out, you can sign that device out from anywhere.
Does it work with my carrier?
MobileyMe works with US mobile numbers on AT&T, T-Mobile, Verizon, and the prepaid brands that run on their networks. You keep your carrier, your plan, and your number. Nothing changes on your bill.
Is it free?
Yes. MobileyMe is free to download and use, with a monthly allowance of calls and texts, so if you're in a bind you can sign in and reach someone without paying anything. Premium is $9.99 a month or $99.99 a year and removes the caps, adds unlimited backup and priority support. No card is needed for the free plan.
Does it work on both iPhone and Android?
Yes, and you can cross over. Lose an iPhone, borrow an Android, and you're back. There is a web version too: sign in from any computer at app.mobileyme.com.
What happens when I sign out of a borrowed phone?
MobileyMe removes your contacts and messages from that device the moment you log out. That wipe-on-logout step is one of our three granted patents and it is on by default.
