iPhone Handoff vs signing in on another phone.

iPhone Handoff is new in iOS 27. It lets one number live on two iPhones, with one active at a time. Signing in to MobileyMe on another phone is a different tool with different limits. Here is what each one does, what each needs before the bad day, and where Handoff is simply the better answer. Carrier details checked October 12, 2026, and they may change.

What iPhone Handoff does

Handoff gives a second iPhone your number as its own eSIM. Calls, voicemail, messages and Find My location move to whichever of the two iPhones you unlock, and the other one goes quiet. Apple's own wording is that your number is active on only one iPhone at a time, so this is one line shared between two phones, not two lines.

You need two iPhones on iOS 27 or later, signed in to the same Apple Account and connected to Wi-Fi, with an eSIM from a carrier that supports it. Apple's list names T-Mobile in the US and Telekom in Germany. No Canadian carrier is on it.

T-Mobile's price is $5 a month, plus taxes and fees, and at launch it is open to postpaid consumer and sole proprietor accounts. According to MacRumors, Apple has said Verizon will add support later this year, with no date or price yet, and AT&T has not committed to it. Call forwarding, Caller ID and account management stay tied to your main iPhone.

It has to be set up ahead of time. T-Mobile says you do it on the iPhone that doesn't hold your main eSIM. Apple's support page doesn't say what to do if one of the two iPhones is lost. It does say to keep a passcode on each one, since unlocking is what decides which iPhone is active, and to contact your carrier to replace an iPhone.

The older Apple option, for iPad and Mac

Apple has long let an iPad or Mac make and take calls through your iPhone. Apple's page says the iPhone should be on and nearby, on the same Wi-Fi network and the same Apple Account, and that Wi-Fi Calling is what lets those devices work when the iPhone isn't nearby. It doesn't mention a lost iPhone, so don't count on it for that.

What signing in to MobileyMe on another phone does

If you set MobileyMe up on your phone first, you can sign in on another phone, a spare or one you borrow, and your backed-up contacts and your MobileyMe messages are there. Messages you send from the app come from a MobileyMe line, not from your normal number. Texts other people send to your own number, including bank login codes, stay with your SIM.

On iPhone, calls you place from the app show your number on the carriers we have tested, once you have verified it with a one-time call to your number while you still have the phone. With call forwarding on through a US carrier, calls to your number can ring the iPhone you signed in on. Forwarding has to be turned on before the phone is lost. Calling and forwarding are verified on iPhone only.

It doesn't need a second iPhone or a carrier add-on, and it works with US and Canadian numbers. It has limits too. Texts from the app are not from your number. A call placed from an app is not a carrier call, so we can't promise how a given carrier will show it.

Which one fits

If you're on T-Mobile and own or plan to buy two iPhones, Handoff gives you something an app can't: your real carrier line, texts included, on a second phone. That is a better result than MobileyMe's, and at $5 a month it is worth a look.

If you're not on T-Mobile, don't have a second iPhone, or have a Canadian number, Handoff isn't open to you yet, and signing in on another phone is the option on the table.

Neither one works after the fact. Both have to be set up while your phone still works.

If your phone is already gone

If you didn't set up either one, the fix is on your carrier's side: a replacement SIM or eSIM. Our guide to getting your number back covers the steps, and forwarding calls from a lost phone covers what your carrier may do in the meantime.

If your number is working today

Your contacts and messages, on another phone.

If you set MobileyMe up on your phone first, your backed-up contacts and MobileyMe messages are there when you sign in on another phone. MobileyMe is free to download on the App Store and Google Play, and it works with US and Canadian numbers only. Verification is a call to your number, so setup works while you can answer one.

Questions people ask

How much does iPhone Handoff cost?
On T-Mobile it is $5 a month, plus taxes and fees, according to T-Mobile, and at launch it is open to postpaid consumer and sole proprietor accounts. Apple lists T-Mobile in the US and Telekom in Germany as carriers that support it. MacRumors reports Verizon is expected later this year, and AT&T has not committed.

Does iPhone Handoff work on Android?
No. T-Mobile says it is an iPhone-only feature. Both phones have to be iPhones on iOS 27 or later, signed in to the same Apple Account.

Can I use iPhone Handoff after my phone is lost?
Only if you set it up before. If you already have a second iPhone set up for Handoff, Apple says calls, voicemail and messages move to whichever iPhone you unlock. Apple's page does not say what to do about a lost iPhone, so contact your carrier.

Can signing in to MobileyMe on another phone replace iPhone Handoff?
They do different things. Handoff gives a second iPhone your actual carrier line. MobileyMe, set up and verified on your phone first, gives you your backed-up contacts and MobileyMe messages on another phone, and on iPhone, calls you place from the app show your number, on the carriers we have tested. Messages from the app come from a MobileyMe line, not from your number.
